Wow! Image Metrics uses video of actors faces to transfer facial expressions to 3D characters. This technology is going to bring a whole new level of realism to gaming and CG entertainment in general.

Story here with more examples on the Image Metrics blog.

Malaysians are horny buggers

I’m just looking through Alexa rankings for Malaysia and was surprised by a few things. First, congrats to MalaysiaKini - the top news site in Malaysia (according to Alexa) beating out all other mainstream media outlets in the country. Speaking of beating, Redtube (NSFW - hardcore adult videos) happens to be the 29th most popular site in Malaysia. More popular than ESPN, AirAsia, Lelong.com.my, download.com, mininova.org and Ebay. Redtube is almost as popular as Flickr. Surprising for a Muslim country with less than peppy broadband speeds.

Maybe all that Anwar anal sex news has people excited ?

To be fair, Alexa tracks the habits of people who have installed the Alexa toolbar. We’re talking geeks, sys admins, webmasters and (horny) web publishers.

Half of network TV online video viewers choose online over broadcast

I grab most of my network TV from torrents and then pop the divx or xvid onto a thumb drive and watch it on the set in living room. If it’s a show only I am interested in, I might watch it on my macbook on the way to the office. I do see my wife filling in / catching up on shows with YouTube though. Interesting stuff.

50% of online viewing is panel members watching episodes they missed on television. They are either filling in an episode online when they had already seen the other episodes around it on TV (18.7%), or they are catching up on an episode online after seeing the subsequent episodes on TV (31.3%)
The other 50% of online viewing is viewers watching shows they don’t see any other way during the month. These are apparently viewers using the Internet to check out shows, replacing the channel flipping or sampling they might have done on the television in the past.

Swarm Player, P2P video seeks to disrupt

This looks interesting. Live, download and VOD delivery capable. Mac version due out next week when the bugs are out.

The EU-funded P2P Next project has been beta testing a new open source streaming solution since late last week, streaming both a live webcam transmission and an archived video from the BBC through its BitTorrent-based SwarmPlayer. I had a chance to check in with P2P Next’s scientific director, Johan Pouwelse, today about the progress of the test. “(It’s been) positive beyond our expectations,” he told me, adding that more than 4,000 users have installed the latest beta version of SwarmPlayer.

Roku Netflix is popular and hackable

Rafat Ali over at Paidcontent writes:

The Roku-Netflix (NSDQ: NFLX) movie delivery box, which went out of stock soon after it was launched, has apparently sold close to 100K units since its launch in May, a seemingly high number considering its limited application and selection of Netflix movies for now..that number comes from Dan Rayburn on his blog.

The Roku box has become an interest to hackers who are excited regarding the players potential capacity to do more than playback Netflix movies with the release of the player sourcecode. That would be my guess as to the popularity.

I watched this on the bus home yesterday and then showed it again on home theater last night. Great stuff. I love TED Talks!

How is he doing the driving though? I’m a skeptic. There is a ‘trick’ going on of course.. but really, how is he driving while blindfolded?
